Mark Regnerus, a controversial anti-gay researcher, recently claimed that legalizing gay marriage would somehow grant straight men "permission to stray."
Regnerus made headlines in 2012 after his “family structure” study was repeatedly cited by anti-gay conservative organizations as evidence that same-sex couples are inferior parents.
However, that was debunked by an internal audit by the journal Social Science Research, which originally published the study, noted The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The study was actually about unstable couples, not specifically gay couples, and their effect on children, but that has not stopped Regnerus from slamming gay marriage, notes GoodAsYou.org (audio below).
During a recent speech to the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, Regnerus claimed, "If gay marriage is perceived as legitimate by heterosexual women, it will eventually embolden boyfriends everywhere, and not a few husbands, to press for what men have always historically wanted, but were rarely allowed, sexual novelty and a form of the permission to stray, without jeopardizing their primary relationship."
"Discussions of openness and sexual partners in straight marriages will become more common," added Regnerus.
Regnerus also claimed that anal sex between heterosexuals "got a boost from the normalization of gay men's sexual behavior."
However, it's not clear what evidence Regnerus bases his claims on.
