Sweeping reversal in gay marriage attitudes: poll

  Nearly 60 percent of Americans now believe same-sex couples should be allowed to marry, and 50 percent agree that they have a constitutional right to wed, according to a new Washington Post/ABC News national poll. The survey shows an almost complete reversal from a decade ago.  The same poll, in 2004, showed 38 percent of Americans backing same-sex marriage with 59 percent opposed.  The latest figure is 59 percent in favor and just 34 percent in opposition. The poll asked voters if they agree that the U.S. Constitution’s equal protection clause gives gays and lesbians the right to wed:  50 percent said yes, 41 percent said no.
