Although Colorado has a ban on gay marriage, the state does allow same-sex couples to enter beneficiary agreements and civil unions. Still, that progress in the law is not enough for Jack Phillips, the owner of a cake shop who refuses to bake for gay and lesbian weddings.
Phillips, who owns Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado, has been denying same sex couples since at least 2012, when Dave Mullins and Charlie Craig filed a complaint against him for refusing to bake a cake for their wedding. In his denial, Phillips cited both the constitution and his religion.
“I’m not going to make cakes for same-sex weddings,” Phillips said to the Blaze, “That violates my First Amendment speech ... and my duty as a Christian abiding by my savior.”
A Colorado court recently ruled against Phillips, however, claiming that the baker discriminated against the couple which he had denied. The court claimed that his cakes did not constitute freedom of speech.
In response to the ruling, Philips has declared that he will stop making wedding cakes entirely, according to the Huffington Post.
Despite the overwhelming amount of attention Phillips has received since the 2012 incident — including his fair share of angry calls — the baker maintains that his business has not been hurt.
“It’s actually increased our business. Since we were in the news, it’s busier,” Phillips told The Blaze.
