Indiana Governor Mike Pence told state agencies not to recognize any of the hundreds of same-sex marriages made in June in Indiana. A federal judge struck down Indiana’s gay marriage ban on June 25, but the state appealed the decision, and an appellate court issued a stay.Pence stated, “The State of Indiana must operate in a manner [consistent] with the laws of Indiana. So we have directed our state agencies earlier this week to conduct themselves in a way that respects current Indiana law, pending this matter's process through the courts.”
He added that the law “is in full force and effect, and executive branch agencies are to execute their functions as though the U.S. District Court order of June 25 had not been issued… In consultation with our legal counsel, we believe a proper reading of the Court of Appeals decision stays the impact of the initial federal court decision.
