A Mexican congresswoman representing the state of Puebla where same-sex marriages are not legally recognized told supporters that gay people people should not be allowed to marry because they supposedly do not face each other during sex.
The Mexican Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex couples married in states where gay marriage is legal must have their marriages recognized even in states that have not yet legalized the practice. The state of Puebla is currently debating whether to legalize same-sex marriage there.
“Marriage should only be considered in those relationships in which the members have sex while facing each other,” said the PAN Party politician, Ana María Jiménez Ortiz. “A marriage should only be considered amongst people that can look at each other in the eye while having sexual intercourse, something that does not happen in homosexual couples.”
In addition to revealing her own limited view of sexual activities between partners in same-sex relationships, Jiménez Ortiz also cited a since-debunked sociological study to support her anti-gay marriage stance.
The 2012 study authored by Mark Regnerus of the University of Texas that asserted same-sex couples make for inferior parents compared with heterosexual couples has since been debunked because of faulty methodology. Regnerus compared children of gay parents who had split up with those of straight parents who remained together.
He also defined a gay parent as one who had acknowledged ever participating in a same-sex relationship, even one that lasted only a brief time.
Jiménez Ortiz stated that her remarks were taken out of context, saying any report that appeared in the media or on the social network Twitter, where she was widely attacked, “doesn't sum up the explanation that I made and that this has generated a series of attacks toward me on social networks, from people that unfortunately were not there and only have information from one source."
