From the Discovery Channel's first scripted show, the riveting miniseries "Klondike," to the Animal Planet's "Puppy Bowl," with real live puppies and some real live kittens as well, to Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey taking questions about the first season of the new HBO anthology series "True Detective," the day was jam-packed. John Oliver was funny, Mike Judge and Alec Berg were kinda dull but their new show "Silicon Valley" looks good, "Girls' " executive producer Jenni Konner was aghast at a question from a male reporter suggesting Lena Dunham keep her clothes on more often, and Julia Roberts, who plays Dr. Emma Brookner in "The Normal Heart," was bemused by a question about doing an "unglamorous" role: "The Normal Heart" is Larry Kramer's historic 1985 play about the conspiracy of denial, by gay men as well as the straight political establishment, that pervaded the early years of AIDS. Not only are they all out, but they are also out at a time when gay marriage is legal in California, when LGBT characters are depicted on all kinds of shows and films, when the Boy Scouts of America is admitting gay members, when "don't ask, don't tell" is a quaint folly of the past, and when gay actors like Groff don't have to worry about being typecast as a "gay actor" just because they take a few gay roles. Why, a lesbian comic is the People's Choice Awards winner for the 14th time as favorite daytime talk show host. [...] Parsons probably has to build a new wing on his house to store all the Emmys and other awards he wins regularly for his CBS hit comedy "The Big Bang Theory." Yet it's possible that some people may find "Looking" more offensive than, say, "Will & Grace," a good show, or "Sean Saves the World," a not-so-good show, because the HBO series doesn't do the whole wink-wink thing about one defining aspect of being gay: gay people have actual sex.
